Good Afternoon.  The following message is being sent on behalf of Dr. General Davie, Superintendent of the Natomas Unified School District:

“After meeting with staff, parents, students and community members in recent weeks over the issue of closing an elementary school and other issues that affect schools, I am making the following recommendations:

1) There be no closure of an elementary school in 2010-11;
2) Our K-5 elementary schools be converted to K-6 schools; and
3) Leroy F. Greene Middle School be closed for academic reasons - Leroy Greene will be in year 5 of Program Improvement next year.

These recommendations will be the focus of a Special Board Workshop on Wednesday, February 24th at 6 p.m. at Natomas High School in the theater.  Pending direction from the Board Workshop, action is set on these issues for March 10th at 6:30 p.m. at Inderkum High.”

School Closure Rating Sheet

The School Closure Criteria Evaluation Committee is presenting its report to the Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees at its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Natomas High School theater.

After lengthy deliberations by the committee Wednesday evening, these schools are the top candidates being forwarded to the Board for closure consideration:

  • Bannon Creek Elementary
  • Jefferson Elementary
  • Natomas Park Elementary

The Board has decided to close an elementary school in 2010-11 as part of its Budget Recovery Plan to save an estimated $330,000 in operating costs per year. The closure is expected to last 3-5 years.

No action on school closure will be taken at the Feb. 10 meeting. The agenda and supporting documents for the meeting will be posted on the district website at www.natomas.k12.ca.us by the close of business Friday, Feb. 5.

A Board workshop on school closure is set for Wednesday, Feb. 24. The Board decision on which school to close is set for the March 10 regular Board meeting.

Community information meetings will be held at Bannon Creek Elementary, Jefferson Elementary and Natomas Park Elementary prior to the Board vote on March 10.

Attached is the School Closure Criteria Rating Sheet compiled by the committee using the Board-approved criteria. The higher the score, the more likely that a school is a candidate for closure.

After completing the rating sheet and applying the weighted criteria, the committee was asked to identify three top schools for closure.  There were 10 committee members present and the results were as follows:

  • Bannon Creek Elementary  (10 votes)
  • Natomas Park Elementary  (10 votes)
  • Jefferson Elementary           (  6 votes)
  • Heron K – 8                           (  4 votes)

Information on the School Closure Criteria Evaluation Committee including meeting agendas, minutes and supporting materials is available by accessing the district website at www.natomas.k12.ca.us, selecting the “Our District” tab at the top of the homepage, and clicking on the “School Closure” link.

2009 STAR Reports Summary

The California Department of Education recently released the 2009 Growth Academic Performance Index (API) and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).  Natomas Unified School District’s results are vastly improved compared to last year.  We have new schools joining the “800 Club” (have an API of 800 or more), and several more poised to join next year.

Notable highlights of this year’s improved results include:

Unfortunately, not all of the news was positive. Despite making some growth school-wide in math and most significant subgroups, Leroy F. Greene Middle School is now in year four of Program Improvement.  Additionally, Natomas Middle School also moved into year two of Program Improvement despite meeting all AYP criteria except one.  Bannon Creek Elementary School is now in year one of Program Improvement after meeting 23 of 26 AYP criteria.  Jefferson Elementary School is also entering year one of Program Improvement.

In summary, we are celebrating the significant growth made by numerous schools and district-wide based on our 2009 STAR results.  Natomas Unified School District will be continuing to closely analyze the data to identify trends, strengths and weaknesses in our instructional program and develop a plan to move more of our schools into the “800 Club” while supporting all of our schools to meet their API/AYP targets for 2010.

Swine Flu Information:

The Sacramento County Grand Jury issued its report this afternoon on the Natomas Unified School District’s purchase of land for a new high school in the West Lakeside area of Natomas.

The report can be viewed at www.sacgrandjury.org. [For a PDF copy of the report, click here]

DISTRICT RESPONSE TO GRAND JURY 6-24-09

Following is a statement from NUSD Board of Trustees President B. Teri Burns in response to the report:

“The Board thanks the Grand Jury for its thorough and diligent investigation of this issue. The District was pleased to fully cooperate with the Grand Jury and appreciates its thoughtful recommendations, particularly those with regard to oversight of professional staff contracted to advise the district.

The District has been, and is in, sensitive ongoing negotiations with all parties involved in the purchase of the site to hopefully resolve and remedy the problems associated with having relied on an erroneous appraisal for the West Lakeside site. The District is not in a position to comment on those ongoing negotiations except to say that they continue to be ongoing, and may prove to be successful for the District and its taxpayers.

The District does not want to jeopardize those negotiations in any way when they could result in an equitable resolution outside of litigation. This would be consistent with the original understanding of the District that it was paying less than "fair market value" for the property, and therefore we cannot comment further.

Once the Board has had the opportunity to review the report, I anticipate that the District will prepare a response and action plan within the next 90 days to address the findings and recommendations.”
